Tax Preparation FAQs
Common questions about documents, timelines, returns, extensions, notices, and cleanup.
What documents do I need for tax filing?
Your secure portal includes a personalized checklist based on your return. Common items include W-2s, 1099s, income statements, mortgage forms, and business or rental documentation.
How long does tax preparation take?
Most returns are completed within 7–14 days after all required documents are received. Timing can vary based on the complexity of the return, seasonal volume, and how quickly additional information or clarification is provided.
Do you prepare business and personal returns?
Yes. We prepare individual and business returns, including S corporations, partnerships, LLC-related filings, Schedule C businesses, and more complex individual returns.
Do you handle multi-state returns?
Yes. We can assist with many multi-state filing situations, including clients who have moved, worked remotely, owned property, or conducted business across state lines.
Do you offer extensions?

What if I get an IRS notice?
We can review the notice and determine the appropriate next step. Additional fees may apply depending on the type and complexity of the notice and the work required.
Do you amend past returns?
Yes. We can prepare amended returns when a correction or update is appropriate, including situations involving reporting errors or eligible items that were missed on the original return.
Can you help clean up bookkeeping before filing?

03
Tax Planning
Tax Planning FAQs
Understand the difference between filing a return and planning before important tax decisions are already made.
What’s the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?
Tax preparation reports and files what has already happened. Tax planning looks ahead so you can evaluate potential tax consequences, identify planning opportunities, and make more informed decisions before key deadlines or transactions occur.
When should I start tax planning?
Tax planning is most useful as a year-round process, particularly before major changes in income, business activity, investments, real estate, or entity structure. Starting before the fourth quarter can also create more time to evaluate year-end opportunities.
Do you help with S corporation elections?
Yes. We can evaluate whether an S corporation election may make sense based on your business, income, payroll considerations, and other relevant facts. The right structure depends on the full situation.
Can tax planning lower my taxes this year?
Tax planning may identify legal opportunities that affect current-year or future taxes, but the result depends on your facts, eligibility, timing, implementation, and applicable tax rules. No specific tax savings can be guaranteed in advance.
Do you offer quarterly check-ins?
Follow-up frequency depends on the scope of the engagement. Certain planning or advisory services may include periodic reviews or check-ins.
What if I get an IRS notice?
We can review the notice and determine the appropriate next step. Additional fees may apply depending on the complexity and work required.
Do I need clean books for tax planning?
Not always, but current and reliable financial records make tax planning more useful. If the books need cleanup, that work may need to be completed separately before certain planning decisions can be evaluated accurately.
04
Bookkeeping
Bookkeeping FAQs
Learn more about software, cleanup, reconciliations, monthly reporting, and ongoing bookkeeping support.
What bookkeeping software do you use?
We use QuickBooks Online for most bookkeeping clients.
Do you offer bookkeeping cleanup?
Yes. Cleanup services are available for businesses with disorganized or incomplete records, including situations involving multiple months or prior periods.
How often do you reconcile books?
Monthly reconciliation is standard for ongoing bookkeeping unless the scope of the engagement calls for a different schedule.
Do you provide accounts payable or receivable support?
Limited accounts payable and accounts receivable support may be available depending on the bookkeeping plan and agreed scope of work.
What’s included in monthly bookkeeping?
Depending on the plan, monthly bookkeeping may include transaction categorization, reconciliations, financial reports, and periodic bookkeeping review meetings.
Will you communicate with my tax preparer?
Yes. When appropriate and authorized, we can coordinate with your tax preparer so the bookkeeping records are ready for tax filing and related questions can be addressed more efficiently.
05
Business Advisory
Business Advisory & Strategic Planning FAQs
For owners who want to use financial information for projections, pricing, cash flow, and better business decisions.
How is advisory different from bookkeeping?
Bookkeeping records and organizes financial activity. Business advisory uses that information to help you interpret performance, evaluate decisions, build projections, and plan what comes next.
Do you help with financial projections?
Yes. Financial projections and scenario planning can be part of a business advisory engagement, depending on the decisions and priorities being evaluated.
Can you help with pricing or cash flow?
Yes. Pricing, profitability, budgeting, cash flow planning, and related financial decisions are areas that may be addressed within the advisory scope.
Do I need clean books first?
Clean, current books make advisory work more reliable because the analysis depends on accurate financial information. If cleanup is needed, that work can be handled separately before or alongside the appropriate advisory work.
06
Financial Planning
Financial Planning FAQs
Questions about planning tiers, ongoing support, faith-aligned stewardship, and the scope of financial planning.
How is financial planning different from tax planning?
Financial planning looks across your broader financial life, including budgeting, savings, cash flow, family goals, retirement, and long-term priorities. Tax planning focuses specifically on evaluating tax implications and planning opportunities.
Do you manage investments?
No. B.D. Smith Wealth does not manage investment accounts through this financial planning service. The engagement focuses on financial organization, goals, stewardship, and decision-making rather than investment management.
Do you offer faith-aligned planning?
Yes. For clients who want it, the planning process can incorporate stewardship, purpose, responsibility, and intentional financial decision-making.
What are your three planning tiers?
- Foundation Clarity Plan
- Strategic Success Plan
- Legacy Growth Plan
Is financial planning ongoing?
It can be. Ongoing check-ins and follow-up depend on the planning tier and scope selected.
